Exercise: Linear Perspective

DSCF0296.JPG

In this exercise we were asked to choose a viewpoint, note where the horizon is and allow the lines to converge towards a point. I chose a rather unusual viewpoint for this exercise. I struggled to find a street that I could just stand and see the tops of houses and see the vanishing point. I found the viewpoint quite by accident. When I was fretting over the lost time on a Sunday afternoon I sat down on the wall outside the entrance to Culzean Castle and there it was…the lines of the wall converged. I sketched the wall and painted first in watercolour then over-painted using acrylic.

The trees in the background were thick and dark. I tried to create the lack of definition and the dense colour by using a dry brush technique. To the right of the wall I tried to add the detail of the leafy foliage using dabs of paint and by scraping back the paint to represent those dried grasses and brier.

The wall starts off taking up approximately half of the page then disappears at the vanishing point.
